Laboratory Information Management System (LIM)

Dr. Cristy Moss, a JWL OER Grant recipient and an Associate Clinical Professor Dept. of Medical Laboratory Sciences, has created and published a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) called Cardinal Medical Laboratory: A Lesson in Laboratory Information Management Systems with Clinical Chemistry Cases in the Open Educational Resource platform.

Synopsis of the Product

The resource is a laboratory software, which will enhance the skills of Medical Laboratory Sciences students as they learn to record, manage, and store data in a clinical laboratory environment.  Although the LIMS is used ubiquitously in Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS), university-based MLS programs have struggled to integrate this automated functionality into the student experience because of the stifling initial cost of implementing a commercially acquired LIMS, which is up to $30,000, minus the additional cost associated with hiring specialized service professionals to manage the system.  Dr. Moss’ developed a budget-friendly LIMS replica that requires little to no setup fees on the part of the end-user, can be easily modified by teachers to suit their student laboratory needs, and can be used by students as a study tool.  This budget-friendly, innovative OER tool can potentially enhance the MLS educational experiences of MLS educators and students worldwide and reduce the financial burden on students in the MLS program.  Dr.Moss’ creation will support three courses in the Medical Laboratory Sciences department of Andrews University.
